Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge (commonly known as Danshen): a perennial upright herb belonging to the Lamiaceae family and Salvia genus, characterized by its dicotyledonous nature. The plant has thick roots with an outer crimson red color and inner white flesh. Its leaves are typically odd-pinnate compound leaves, bearing terminal or axillary racemose inflorescences. The bracts are lanceolate, calyces are bell-shaped and purplish, corollas are purple-blue, stigmas extend far beyond the flower, and the small nuts are black and oval. It blooms from April to August, with fruits appearing after flowering. It is distributed in regions of China including Anhui, Shanxi, Hebei, Sichuan, Jiangsu, Hubei, Gansu, Liaoning, Shaanxi, Shandong, Zhejiang, Henan, and Jiangxi. It also grows in Japan. Danshen thrives in temperate climates with ample sunlight, high humidity, and fertile soil. Insufficient light and low temperatures during the growing season can lead to slow seedling growth and poor plant development. Optimal growth occurs under conditions of an average annual temperature of 17.1°C and an average relative humidity of 77%. It grows best in fertile loamy sandy soils and is not highly sensitive to soil pH; it can be cultivated in neutral, slightly acidic, or slightly alkaline soils.

Danshensu 90% is a core water-soluble active monomer found in the dried roots and rhizomes of Salvia miltiorrhiza, a traditional Chinese medicine from the Lamiaceae family. It appears as a white powder, readily oxidizes and discolors upon exposure to air and light (due to the unstable catechol structure), and is highly soluble in water, methanol, and ethanol. It has poor lipid solubility and should be stored in a light-protected, sealed container at low temperatures.
