Senna leaf extract comes from a shrub that grows in India, Pakistan, and southern China. Its name originates from the Arabic word "sena." Senna leaves are opposite, evergreen, with four to five pairs of lanceolate or oblong, grayish-green leaflets. The leaves are very fragile and easily broken. Senna leaves, pods, and fruits are all used medicinally. Sennosides are extracted from senna leaf extract. Senna leaves contain sennoside A, sennoside B, and emodin-rhodin-dihydroxyanthrone-8,8'-disaccharide, while its pods contain emodin and hyperoside glycosides, as well as small amounts of rhodin or sennoside glycosides. Senna leaves and their pods contain 0.85%–2.86% and 2.34%–3.16% of senna leaf components, respectively. Emodin, rhodin, small amounts of hyperoside, and sennosides A, B, C, and other sennosides can be isolated from them. These senna leaf compounds exist in the form of glycosides. Senna leaf extract also contains 3,5-dimethyl-4-methoxybenzoic acid, tannins, and anthocyanins.
