Grape seed extract is an industrial derivative extracted from whole grape seeds, rich in oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs). Oligomeric proanthocyanidins were first discovered in peanut shells by French scientist Jacques Masciquelier and have since been widely found in various plants. Oligomeric proanthocyanidins refer to a large class of polyphenolic compounds widely found in plants. Their common characteristic is that they can generate anthocyanins when heated in an acidic medium, hence the name proanthocyanidins. Proanthocyanidins are pigment components of plants and are widely found in many plant species.
