99% Dl-Cystine is a sulfur-containing homodimeric amino acid, formed by the connection of two cysteine molecules through a disulfide bond. Cysteine is the product formed when two cysteines are oxidized by their side-chain sulfhydryl groups to form a disulfide bond. It contains two chiral centers and is insoluble in water. L-cysteine in proteins is formed after the peptide chain is formed by the oxidation of two cysteine acid residues. Like cysteine, cysteine is a non-essential amino acid. Cysteine contains a sulfhydryl group (-SH), while cystine contains a disulfide bond (-S-S-). The two can be converted into each other. L-cysteine is a component of proteins. Cysteine is found in keratin, hair, wool, and gelatin. It is produced industrially by the hydrolysis extraction method.
